| | I have long heard about this famous fried chicken from Popeyes that was said to be better than KFCs'. If I had wanted a taste of that delicious fried chicken, it would mean a tiring trip all the way to the Airport! Unfortunately, the distance to the Airport is way too far for me. Although there is another outlet at the Singapore Flyers, it too is quite out of the way for me. So, where do I go if I wanted some fried chicken from Popeyes?
At the newly opened outlet at Square 2, of course!
It was my first visit at Popeyes and I was unfamiliar with what they have to offer. After studying the menu briefly, I decided to go for the 3 piece Chicken Combo (SGD 9.80) which comes with three pieces of chicken, one biscuit, a regular side (I chose Cajun Fries) and a regular drink (Coke).
I was dismayed to learn that Fries is not a standard item on the combo menu and have to be ordered separately as a side dish. I had initially planned to order the popular Smashed Potato as a side (thinking that the combo comes with Fries by default) but since I can't have the best of both world, I had to give one up.
(It is also due to my habit of not exceeding SGD 10 on a meal when I'm eating alone)
Anyway, I requested for spicy chicken parts and was informed that there is a waiting time of around ten minutes, to which I gave my approval. I was given a number tag so, I collected the tray with my Cajun Fries and Coke on it and sat down at a table while waiting for my chicken to be delivered.
My spicy chicken parts served I got a normal sized wing, a puny drumstick and a large chicken breast
Deep Fried Spicy ChickenWhen the crew brought me my chicken, I grieved because I have heard so much raves about their larger-than-KFC's chicken parts yet mine did not look anything like what they have described. But, there is indeed some truth in what I read about their chicken skin being very crispy and not too oily. As I sink my teeth into the meat, I find that the chicken is only marinated on the surface while the inside is not as flavorsome which makes the chicken breast a pain to eat.
To be fair, the chicken flesh is really tender and moist but that is all to it. Another thing that upsets me is why can't I taste any hint of spiciness from my spicy chicken? (Or have I been served the mild version all along? It's my first time having Popeyes so I could not tell.)
Score: Cajun Fries I'm a potato freak which explains why I wanted to add Smashed Potato as a side, on top of the Cajun Fries which I assumingly thought comes together with my chicken in a combo.
Cajun Fries is one of the main reasons why I'm there in the first place!
Unfortunately, the Fries which I was looking so much forward to is a big let down. The portion was extremely pathetic and it was served to me dead cold. When it comes to food, if there is one thing that I can't stand about, it has to be cold food. Well, unless the food is meant to be served cold, like salads and coleslaws, otherwise, my food has to be hot. It might have been the saving grace of the day if it was served piping hot!Fries, Cajun or not, are supposed to be hot and crispy; not cold and limpy. This one FAIL! Score: BiscuitI was wondering why is it called a 'biscuit' when it actually looked more like bread (scone, in fact) to me. The biscuit was crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. When you break it apart, a buttery fragrance emerges from within. However, I do not like the savoury taste ( too salty for my liking) and for the fact that it sticks to my teeth (definitely not denture-friendly). Moreover, the crew who delivers my biscuit together with the chicken did not give me my jam so that brings the score further down a little.
Score: Conclusion While queuing to place my order earlier, I had actually thought of packing another 3 piece Chicken Combo home for my parents to try out but I banished that thought after my unsatisfactory meal. With such food standards, I must be out of my mind to fork out another SGD 9.80 for this! People say "first impression counts." This first visit alone is deterrant enough to keep me away from Popeyes for quite a while. In the meanwhile, I will remain faithful to the Colonels' recipe of 11 herbs and spices.
Now, I wonder what's all the hype with the tasteless chicken and cold Cajun Fries that Popeyes serves? I paid SGD 10 for three pieces of tasteless chicken Click here for the rest of the photos at my flickr.
