Waffletown USA

Fried chicken served with fork and knife!

Do you recall dining at KFC in the early 1980s when fried chicken was served with fork and knife? I remembered my siblings and I would be so excited to visit KFC that we will always clamour for a window seat so that we could see the people outside the restuarant looking in at us! Ha!

From cutlery to air-con and the bottles of Chilli Sauce and Ketchup on every table, dining at KFC was such a high class affair to us then!

However, I'm not going to write about KFC in this post today but about another old school establishment that serves chicken with fork and knife till this very day.

Now, where can this place be but...

Waffletown!

Does anyone still remember Waffletown?

Originally situated at the basement of Bukit Timah Shopping Center, Waffletown sells old school American food like Fried Chicken, Burgers and notably, Waffles. I recall returning to Bukit Timah Shopping Center one day, after a long absence, to find the whole shop gone! It was only after many years later that I found out they have moved to Balmoral Plaza along Bukit Timah Road.

The menu

Stepping in, Waffletown seems to have frozen in time for everything here is a reminscent of days gone by! From the menu board to the brown and orange swivel chairs, everything about Waffletown is so old school!

What does this chair reminds you of?

Right!

Two piece chicken set

Two Piece Chicken Set (comes with Coleslaw, Whipped Potato and a regular drink) SGD 7.20
Although named Waffletown, Waffles is not the love of my life here.

Their chickens were thoroughly marinated not just on the outside, but the inside as well! I cannot tell you how tasty it is! The skin was very crispy while the meat moist and juicy! Waffletown definitely knows their chicken way better than Popeyes does!

Score:

Coleslaw and Whipped Potato
While it's nothing to shout about, I find comfort in tasting again, a familiar taste which I had so long ago. The Coleslaw was chopped in chunks so there was crunch with every bite. The dressing was much more tangy if you compare it to the KFC Coleslaw. On the other hand, the texture of the Whipped Potato is firm. As I dug my fork into the Whipped Potato, the whole ball of potato almost lifted off from the plate.

Score:

Waffle Ala Mode (with Black Cherry and Vanilla Ice Cream) SGD 5.50
Believe it or not, this is my first time having waffles at Waffletown.

I have sensitive teeth so I was actually quite worried that this combination would be too sweet for me. I was even prepared to forgo the whipped cream should my teeth starts stinging in protest! But to my delight, the whipped cream and fruit topping were not sweet at all.

I was actually expecting some kind of commercial jam as topping so imagine my surprise when I realised that they used real Black Cherry!

I would say Waffletown's waffles make a good dessert choice for the health conscious.

Score:

One thing that draws me to Waffletown is it's homely feel and also because of the 1980s charm. I can't wait to indulge in their old school Burgers (that comes in styrofoam boxes!) and reminiscing about the good old days!

I used to patronize Waffletown as a kid and still do. It's one of my favorite hangout spots in fact. Thanks to the homely feel to it. And I must agree, the chicken here is definitely better than Popeyes...I think it's probably the best friend chicken anywhere in Singapore!
