| | I have been wanting to try the Popiah from My Cosy Corner ever since it was shown on a Channel 8 culinary program some years ago.
Stepping foot into Coronation Plaza, a sense of nostalgia sets in. Time seems to have stopped here since the 1980s!
The sign at the top of the escalator Nestled at the furthest end of the second floor, one would be greeted by the refreshing fragrance of lemongrass. As one walked past the rows of shops towards My Cosy Corner, it became apparant that the smell did not come from it's kitchen but from the foot massage parlor.
It's amazing how many dishes this small eatery can churn out! I was there mainly for the Popiah but having just that does not seem to justify all the traveling done so I ordered Mee Siam as well.
I have long heard about the owners' sour-like-kannah faces and I was all prepared to put up with any bad service but on the contrary, the person who served me was extremely polite.
I was thanked repeatedly when my order was served, when payment was made and when my change was returned.
Popiah SGD 2.20 per piece Costing the equivalent of two Popiahs from my nearest coffeeshop, this Popiah had better be good!
At first bite, the turnip was bursting with flavors and the flavors were done right (the chilli is potent!) but I find that the texture of the turnip is too soft. I prefer my turnip a little more 'robust' with crunch. They do, however, have some crispy bits in the Popiah, that's made of rice which has been sun-dried and deep fried.
Despite the liquids from the sweet sauce and turnip, the Popiah skin remained resilient and did not crumble when I lifted each piece with my chopsticks!
Mee Siam SGD 3.80 (SGD 4.50 with Prawns) Maybe it's just me but it does not taste exactly like the Mee Siam one would find at a typical Malay stall.
Not that it is a bad thing, of course!
The Mee Siam is still very appetising except it tastes a little different from the usual Mee Siam.
I cannot pinpoint where exactly the problem lies but it is special in it's own way. Perhaps, it is the Peranakan touch? Afterall, the recipe was handed down by the current owners' aunt, Leong Yee Soo who is a popular cookbook author (also younger sister of MM Lee's late mother).
(Hmmm, so does that mean the current owner and MM Lee are cousins?)
The Mee Siam gravy is very rich being sweet, tangy and spicy all at the same time. It's an explosion of flavors! The squares of fried bean curd surprised me by remaining crispy despite having been soaked in the gravy for quite some time (while I was busy taking pictures).
Frankly speaking, this plate of Mee Siam is a little pricey for the portion given but I guess a little indulgence once in a while is still alright.
