Seclusion Trip To Hat Yai, Thailand Part II

Hello, it was the second day we arrived in Hat Yai.

After a not-so-good nights' sleep, we were raring to go in search of breakfast at the local wet market which is just a stone's throw away from our hotel.

Visiting the local wet market is one sure way of seeing and experiencing life of the locals because we can learn alot about another culture judging by the food they eat and the things they use.

Upon reaching, I discovered that there is both a indoor market (they call it Kim Yong Shopping Center) and a outdoor one. The indoor market is dark and cramp with almost 90% of the stalls closed while the outdoor market is bustling with activities.

The outdoor market seems like an extension of the indoor one, spilling from the sidewalk and onto the road. From strange looking vegetables to live fishes squirming on shallow pans, the local market is definitely an eye opener for us city folks!

Here in Hat Yai, it's alright if you do not speak Thai because some of the people here speaks Malay or Teochew and even Hakka. I guess this has got to do with it's geographical location because Hat Yai is very near to Malaysia. Therefore, do not be surprised when you see a Muslim peddling snacks by the roadside!

Monks on pick-ups are a common sight

Offer alms to a monk and they would say a prayer for you.

Looks tempting but I wonder what meat is concealed under all that marinade?

Looks suspiciously like... rat meat?

My favourite stall!

Delicious fried things!

One of my favourite fried thingy with yam paste

We picked a inconspicuous little hut to have our breakfast. Operated by a Teochew-speaking old lady, the hut was constructed totally out of wooden planks and had a corrugated zinc roof. We could order food from any stall out there in the street to eat here but we have to order drinks from them. I think it functions pretty much like our very own coffeeshop.

Glutinous Rice

Having breakfast like the locals

I don't mind sharing food as long as it doesn't involve direct contact with other people's saliva.

Pig's Blood Porridge

Pig's blood! Haven't had that for a long, long time!

Miniature Dough Stick in butterfly shape

Honestly speaking, there is nothing much in Hat Yai except for it's cheap food so don't be surprise to see only food pictures from this trip. Watch out for the next entry where I will show you what we did in the afternoon!
