Seclusion Trip To Hat Yai, Thailand Part V

If you have read about my previous trip (link found in Part I of this Hat Yai trip series), you would have known that it's rise and shine for the Monks at 4.30 in the morning and they would seek alms at the village outside the temple after their morning prayers.

The second picture reminded me of this video!

It's hilarious when the older Monk started fleeing! LOL!

I was actually looking forward to following the Monks out to the village on the second day of our visit but was unable to do so as they were busy with the preparations of a very important event that is taking place in the temple that day.

The temple's founder was getting on in years and is no longer able to oversee the day-to-day operations of the temple anymore. Hence, he is handing over his duties to the newly appointed abbot and we were there to bear witness to the ceremony.

Why were we there to bear witness? Because the abbot taking over the temple is my uncle aka my cousin's Dad. Do not ask me why is he a Monk because seriously, I do not know.

But do you now understand why the 姨妈姑姐s tagged along on this trip? They were my uncle's siblings.

Waiting for the ceremony to start

Regrettably, I did not take any pictures of the ceremony because there was just a short speech followed by some chantings and the whole ceremony is over.

After the ceremony, we had the rest of the day to ourselves so we ventured inside the cave!

The entrance

An oil drum - what is it for?

It was filled with water but where did the water come from?

The water was dripping from the 'roof' of the cave.

Limestones?

The reclining Buddha

From the cave looking out towards the temple

Due to low lightings inside (I do not like to use flash), I did not take much pictures of the cave. Some of the turnings were breezy and chilling whereas some reeked of bat feces.

Lunch was next!

Nope, this was actually breakfast - Brown Rice Porridge

This was lunch

Due to the horrifying dining experience at the city, I have quickly learnt to pick the portion of food I want onto a smaller plate to prevent ingesting saliva from the people whom I share the food with.

That is one of the temple's entrance on the right

Since I did not get to follow the Monks out to seek alms in the morning, I decided to take a walk at the village by myself though I did not venture too far away.

A grazing bull

During my previous trip, I remember seeing lots of cows but this time round, this is the one and only cow I see. I guess the rest of the herd have already turned into McPork patties.

Here are some random shots around the temple.

View of the temple

Nightfall comes early at Hat Yai.

By 7pm, the temple and it's surroundings had already been engulfed by darkness. There was really not much entertainment (remember there's no TV, no internet, no newspapers and no contact with the outside world) at night except sleeping.

By some stroke of luck, someone suggested setting off fireworks.

It was my first time watching fireworks live and so up-close! The ashes were literally raining upon us like confetti!

Awesome fireworks!

First fireworks

BOM! BOM! BOM!

Second fireworks

Third fireworks

The aftermath next morning...

Fireworks number one

Fireworks number 2 and 3

This short fireworks display certainly helped bring some excitement to my last night at this otherwise mundane stay at the temple!
