| | Greetings, everyone! This is my second entry for 2011 and what better topic to talk about but Singaporean's passion, food! Well, this was actually a overdue post from last year. Some of you might have known from my earlier tweets that I have been looking high and low for my camera's battery charger to no avail since returning from Hatyai. Though I was pretty sure that I did bring it back to Singapore, I had no choice but to buy a new one at it's head office which was located near Bukit Merah.
At the time of this update, I have already found the lost charger which has mysteriously found it's own way inside the storage box under my bed so I am now stucked with two chargers but that would be another story to be told another time!As the story goes, just the night before I went down, I did a search on what's good to eat around that area. What I found out was that the head office is just across the road from this ABC Brickworks Market & Food Centre. Or more affectionately known as the ABC Market So, why is it called the ABC Market?
That is because the former building standing on this exact site is ABC Stout Breweries! A further search revealed some of the more popular stalls like Wow Wow West and Fatty Cheong Wanton Mee but what really caught my eyes stomach was Lifang Porridge. As a Cantonese, I loved Porridge! In fact, I loved Porridge so much that I could have it for my three meals but not just any porridge will do. It has to be Cantonese Porridge! I ordered the Mixed Pork Porridge SGD3 Here at Lifang Porridge, you would be gravely disappointed to know that there are no rings of youtiao in your porridge but, rejoice because you get a whole stick of it instead! You would be pleased to know that your youtiao is freshly made and fried on the spot!
You can choose from the standard like Sliced Fish Porridge, Century Egg & Pork Porridge, Pork Ball Porridge, Mixed Pork Porridge or the slightly more exotic Claypot Frogs' Leg Porridge.
Mixed Pork Porridge with youtiaoThe use of pork and chicken bones (among other secret ingredients) in it's stock base gives Lifang Porridge it's flavorful taste. There is no need for extra condiments like soy sauce and pepper.
This consistency is how I like my porridge without it being too watery or gelatinous The reason I like Cantonese porridge was because of it's thick consistency. In order to cook a good bowl of Cantonese porridge, fire control is very important. If you undercook, it becomes Teochew Muay, which is very watery and bland but, if you overcook it, it becomes too gluey.
Stir! Stir! Stir! Lifang Porridge has quite a few branches around. I have been to the ones at Jurong East (near the Sports Complex/Swimming Pool), Alexandra VIillage, ABC Market and Albert Complex. Do you know of any other branches around?
Who can resist fried intestines?! Surprisingly, the porkball tastes very much like Ikea's meatball! Porkball, fried intestines and slices of pigs' stomach Move over, Tiong Shian Porridge! Lifang Porridge 丽芳粥品 ABC Brickworks Market & Food Centre Block 6 Jalan Bukit Merah #01-45 Singapore 150006
