| | Behold, the legendary Macau Pork Bun! When I first saw the Macau Pork Bun on a travel program years ago, I knew I had fallen in love with this oriental burger. Alas, one had to specially make a trip to Macau in order to have a taste of it. Hence, when I learnt from Daniel Ang that this legendary Pork Bun is available right here in Singapore, I wasted no time in getting my hands on one! To my surprise, this little gem is being sold at Seng Huat Eating House, which is just across the road from MOS Burger at Bugis. This was exactly where I hang out for lunch everyday while I was still working at the nearby Raffles Hospital a few years back.
Simple ingredients but not so simple taste Of course, many changes have since taken place during the few years after I have left this area, including the drop in food standards at Tong Seng Coffeeshop ( the one next door) as well as the setting up of this new stall at Seng Huat Eating House. Seng Huat Eating House occupies two shop spaces and Macau Munch is located right in front of the shop on the left. Approaching the stall, my attention was focused on the variety of Buns on display The stall was manned by a polite chap who took about ten minutes to serve me my order but I guess that is a reasonable waiting time considering that the bun was only prepared upon ordering. What I got was a mini baguette ( or something that looked like it) sliced in half horizontally and toasted with butter. The top bun was slathered with mayo and chilli sauce and then placed on top of the bottom bun with the pork patty and letteuce in-between. At first glance, I thought it was a piece of Bak Kwa but on a closer look, it was really a very skinny piece of meat. However, do not be be taken in by appearances. Skinny it might be but it packs a punch! I call this the " Skinny Patty Hidden Cheese" Burger ( derived from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon) What " hidden cheese" am I talking about? See below. Cheeze oozing from within the pork patty The bun was firm on the surface and fluffy on the inside though not as chewy as a French loaf. The patty on the other hand is tender, juicy and well-marinated. It tasted a little savoury and a little sweet. I am guessing it's either BBQ sauce or Teriyaki Sauce here. You know, I have never tried the one from Macau before so I do not know how this compares to the authentic version but I do enjoy what I'm eating!
At SGD3 (add SGD1 for a drink to make it a set), this is worth every penny if you compare it to the ala carte burgers from a fast food restaurant.
I will definitely return to try the other items on the menu like the Polo Bun with Ham and Butter.
Polo buns are also on the menu Flickr set here. Macau Munch Seng Huat Eating House492 North Bridge Road
